A Little About SPRAT
Most forms of impoverishment are born in the womb of irrationality – of individuals, societies, of governance – resulting from illiteracy and ignorance on the one hand and prejudice and superstition on the other.
A rational society generally is also a fairer, more just, more egalitarian and a happier society – with greater freedoms, accompanied by greater self-restraint, less corruption and better avenues for fulfilling latent human potential.
SPRAT – a national award-winning NGO – was founded by Hasan Jowher, a former banker and management/IT consultant turned social activist. He is dedicated to promoting rationality in all walks of our lives by actively engaging with youth, and by helping empower the under-served of all sections of Gujarati society, whom opportunities of a rising India bypassed.
SPRAT was formally launched in 2002 as a public charitable trust and society. It enjoys registration under ITax Sn 80-G and FCRA. In its 15 years of secular public services, it helped empower over 165,000 women, children and youth through literacy, education and livelihood opportunities. Its innovate AUDA-MUSKAAN Park for Adventure and Science continues to connect Juhapura with Vejalpur in nation building, rationally.
Entities like US State Dept, Ford Foundation, PSUs like ONGC, BSNL, IOC etc patronized SPRAT, as did two former PMs and a Deputy PM, eminent jurists and academics. Its Advisory Board was chaired first by Dr. I G Patel and after his demise, by Lord Bhikhu Parekh. Dr. Y K Alagh continues as its Promoter Trustee.
SPRAT’s MAJLIS Division conducts life-changing workshops called the STORY OF LIFE, tracing human evolution right from the Big Bang through modern civilization, traversing the various physical, chemical, socio-cultural and philosophical developments along the way, using the acclaimed audio-visual material.
